AUBURN, CA (MPG) - Placer County readers spent the summer digging into books, completing activities and exploring the world of reading as part of the 2026 Jurassic Summer Reading Program: “Unearth a Story!”

The annual program, which ran June 7 through Aug. 8, attracted 3,102 readers who collectively logged 2,713,247 minutes of reading - more than 272,000 minutes above last year’s total and setting a new record.

Of those who registered, 1,538 readers completed the challenge by reading at least 10 hours or completing 10 activities. On average, each registered reader logged 875 minutes, or about 14.5 hours, of reading during the summer.

“The response to this year’s Summer Reading Program was incredible,” Library Services Director Amy Boese said. “We’re thrilled to see so many children, teens, adults and families making reading part of their summer.”

The program also brought families together for special events throughout the county. More than 2,750 people attended family programs featuring music, science demonstrations, acrobatics and live animal presentations.

Participants earned “trading stones” by logging reading minutes and completing activities, which could be redeemed for prizes at library trading posts. Readers who completed the challenge also received an “I Survived Jurassic Summer Reading Program” sticker.

The program was offered at library locations in Auburn, Colfax, Foresthill, Granite Bay, Kings Beach, Rocklin and Tahoe City, as well as through the Library on Wheels. The summer concluded with a Jurassic Jamboree celebration at each location.

The impact of the program extended beyond the numbers, with families sharing how the challenge helped make reading a regular part of their summer.

“This program really helps motivate my son to read. We've been participating since 2024, and it’s really made a difference. Thank you for doing this every year! I like participating myself too!” a Rocklin parent shared.

“Stories like this are exactly why we offer the Summer Reading Program,” Boese said. “It’s about encouraging children to read, but it’s also about creating opportunities for families to read and learn together. We’re proud that this program continues to engage our community across all ages.”
