KINGS BEACH, CA (MPG) - Making it easier to recycle and keep North Lake Tahoe clean, Placer County has launched a new community stewardship initiative with a free bulk residential cardboard recycling drop-off location in Kings Beach, available throughout the summer.

The Eastern Placer Responsible Refuse program began July 7 and will operate as a summer pilot designed to provide residents and visitors with a convenient option for recycling large amounts of cardboard. If the pilot proves successful and receives strong community support, the county will evaluate opportunities to continue the program in the future.

"This effort is another step toward making responsible waste disposal more convenient for residents while helping protect the environment that makes North Lake Tahoe such a special place," said Placer County District 5 Supervisor Cindy Gustafson. "We appreciate the community members who asked for additional recycling options and we encourage everyone to do their part by using the drop-off bin responsibly."

The free cardboard recycling bin will be located on the Placer County-owned lot at the intersection of North Lake Boulevard and Fox Street in Kings Beach. The bin will be available seven days a week, except for a brief period on Fridays to allow for servicing by Tahoe Truckee Sierra Disposal.

To help keep the program operating smoothly, only clean cardboard will be accepted. All cardboard must be broken down, flattened, and free of food waste, liquids or other contaminants. No other recyclable materials or trash may be placed in the bin. The bin is reserved for residential use and restricted to business use.

Placer County has partnered with Clean Tahoe to monitor the site throughout the pilot program. Community participation will play an important role in the program's success by ensuring the bin remains clean and available for everyone.

All other recyclable materials should continue to be placed inside trash bins and recycled through Placer’s One Big Bin program. Green waste should continue to be taken to the Materials Recycling Facility located at 900 Cabin Creek Road.

Recycling cardboard not only helps reduce landfill waste but it also creates additional space in home trash bins while supporting the community's broader environmental stewardship efforts.
