AUBURN, CA (MPG) - Placer County invites community members to celebrate its 175th anniversary on the Placer County Museum’s Heritage Trail on July 18, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Old Town Auburn.
The free, family-friendly day offers something for every generation — and a chance to help shape the county’s 175th anniversary time capsule.
Throughout the morning, visitors can take a free guided walking tour of Old Town at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., talk with a genealogist about tracing their family history, and explore hands-on historical artifacts.
The event will feature special appearances by characters from Placer County’s past who will be turning up throughout the day.
The celebration also invites the community to help decide what goes inside the county’s future time capsule.
Children can draw their favorite thing about Placer County — a favorite hike, their school or a place they love to go — to be included in the capsule, while visitors of all ages can suggest items worth preserving for future generations.
Using an activity sheet from the Placer County Museums Division, young artists sign their drawings with their name and age before they are set aside for the capsule.
“The Heritage Trail is where Placer County’s history comes to life, so it’s the perfect place to start writing our message to the future,” said Placer County Museums Administrator Bryanna Ryan. “We want everyone — from kids with crayons to longtime residents — to have a hand in what we preserve. When this capsule is opened someday, it should reflect the whole community that filled it.”
Placer County was established April 25, 1851, and has marked its 175th anniversary throughout 2026 with events from Roseville to Tahoe.
Residents can explore 175 years of local history through the county’s online interactive timeline, which traces Placer’s journey from its Gold Rush roots to the thriving region it is today. Visit the Placer County 175th Anniversary timeline webpage at https://engage.placer.ca.gov/175th-anniversary.
The Heritage Trail celebration takes place at the Placer County Museum in the Historic Auburn Courthouse located at 101 Maple Street in Auburn.
The community’s contributions will be preserved in the county’s official 175th anniversary time capsule later this year.
More information about the 175th anniversary and its lineup of events is available at Placer County 175th Anniversary webpage at https://www.placer.ca.gov/10713/Placer-County-175th-Anniversary.
This event is part of the summer-long Heritage Trail Tour of Museums, which opens the doors of museums across Placer County free of charge.
Additional Heritage Trails museums open July 18 include the Auburn Joss House, Gold Rush Museum and Old Town Post Office.
