Smith and Hawken® Continues to Flourish in California With Roseville Store Opening

Smith and Hawken in Roseville

ROSEVILLE, CA—August 27, 2008— Smith & Hawken, the premier authority in outdoor garden living, will open a 14,608 square foot store at the new Fountains at Roseville mall in Roseville, CA on Tues, October 7th. The Novato-based retailer offers best of class outdoor furniture, garden essentials, home décor and gifts.

The Roseville location is the debut of the latest store design by Smith & Hawken, which features 32 foot high ceilings, rustic garden-inspired textures, plants and flowers, and organic elements, all illuminated by an abundance of natural light. “We’re thrilled about this new store, as the large footprint allows us to offer the ultimate shopping experience for both indoor and outdoor garden living,” states Felix Carbullido, GM of Smith & Hawken. The store will also feature a lush 2200 square foot outdoor garden, one-of-a-kind vintage accents for the home and garden, and one of the largest selections of outdoor furniture of all Smith & Hawken stores.

In addition, the store design features many sustainable elements. “As Smith & Hawken grows, so does our responsibility to seek out eco-friendly avenues in everything we do,” states Carbullido. “The store was constructed using recycled materials, such as steel, aluminum, and brick, wherever possible.” Other eco-friendly elements include:

  • POS fixtures and select product feature walls clad in reclaimed barn wood
  • Numerous skylights to reduce the need for interior lights, plus solar panels and daylight overrides on light fixtures to keep energy use low
  • Reclaimed redwood slab countertops and automatic faucets to reduce water usage in restrooms
  • Light-colored concrete floors and exterior paving to reduce the "urban heat island" effect
  • Wood slat awnings on east and west elevations to reduce heat gain
  • On-site composters store staff will utilize for all garden waste
  • Built-in catchment systems to gather rainwater to water all store plants

As with all Smith & Hawken stores, the new store will offer special services, such as potting, delivery, and tool sharpening, as well as an extremely knowledgeable sales team. Special to the Roseville store is a Garden Advisor, who will be on-hand to answer questions and provide helpful resources, as well as provide ideas and inspiration for planting.

The Roseville Chamber of Commerce will hold a ribbon cutting at the store on October 10. Smith & Hawken will throw a free community barbecue on Saturday, October 25 from 1pm-4pm, which will feature live music and giveaways.

The new Roseville location is the seventh Smith & Hawken store in Northern California, joining Berkeley, Burlingame, Los Gatos, Mill Valley, Palo Alto and Walnut Creek, and the twelfth store overall in the state of California.

The store design was created by the renowned McCall Design Group, a San Francisco-based firm whose client roster includes clients such as W Hotels, SFMOMA, Kate Spade and the San Francisco Symphony.

Company History

Smith & Hawken® was founded in 1979 as a garden tool company when John Jeavons, a dedicated organic gardener, asked his friends Dave Smith and Paul Hawken if they could source his favorite hand-forged gardening tools from England. Soon after, Dave and Paul began importing the finest high-quality gardening tools found in the marketplace – which were unavailable in the United States until that time. Once a simple mail-order tool company, now almost thirty years later, Smith & Hawken is a multi-channel retailer of high-quality garden and outdoor living products marketed through its catalog, retail stores, and web site, www.SmithandHawken.com

In 1982, Smith & Hawken opened its first retail store in Mill Valley, California. Today, the retail chain has grown to exceed the original catalog business, and sells its products through 58 stores in 23 states, including the District of Columbia. Currently, many of the company’s stores are housed in historic buildings renovated with the same attention to detail and craftsmanship required of Smith & Hawken products.

In 1993, founders Dave and Paul retired from the company and Smith & Hawken became part of the retail conglomerate CML group, a publicly traded company. This association with CML allowed Smith & Hawken to accelerate its rate of growth and expand its network of stores and product offerings. In 1999, Smith & Hawken was purchased by a private investor group with an eye to further enhance the growth of the brand. Five years later, in 2004, Smith & Hawken was acquired by The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company, the leading supplier of consumer products for lawn and garden care.

Since then the company has continued to grow and expand its national brand awareness through an increased number of new business ventures, including wholesale accounts at high-end independent garden centers and a deal with Target Corporation to provide an exclusive line of products in all of their 1400 stores. In addition, the company has redesigned its catalog and web site, as well as created a larger floor plan model for all of its new retail locations going forward.

Today, Smith & Hawken is the premier authority in outdoor living, dedicated to providing products distinguished by authenticity, style and above all, fine craftsmanship. Consistently developing an expanding number of product categories, Smith & Hawken offers a range of garden tools, outdoor furniture, garden structure, lighting, outdoor entertaining and décor, plants and containers. Products are produced with the highest quality materials, including Premium Teak™ furniture, which is environmentally farmed plantation teak from the island of Java, where teak production and replanting are stringently enforced by the government.

Smith & Hawken strives to nurture creativity and growth for its employees. The company’s corporate office is housed in a recycled Air Force hangar that offers plenty of space to grow trees indoors, as well as a working garden outdoors. It is a space in which beauty, creativity and a healthy working environment grow and prosper.
